Save the Date - Wednesday 1 May at 7.00pm – 8.30pm

30th Jan 2019

With the seemingly endless desire to have everything from coffee machines and fridges, to front doors and dolls connected via the internet, very often the security considerations fall far behind the marketing. The average person owns 3.5 connected devices, but a single breached device on your home network can render them all vulnerable, putting your information, privacy and security at risk.

This presentation on Wednesday 1 May at 7pm in the school will cover everyday practical cybersecurity, focussing on how to keep your connected devices, home, and family safe(r) online. Topics will include: spotting fraudulent emails (phishing), good password hygiene, physical device security, computer viruses, ransomware and WiFi security, along with demonstrations of how easily a device can be attacked if not protected. This will be presented at an accessible level, and no special technical knowledge is required.

Speaker:
Dr Domhnall Carlin is a Research Fellow in Cybersecurity at the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) in Queen’s University Belfast, where he received an MSc in Software Development and a PhD in Computer Science (Cybersecurity).
